No speed limit, each car was tuned prior to the race. The track is tricky, with the longest straight being three pieces of track. Two 180º turns should keep the Class B cars in the race.
A pretty technical track for my standards. Short straights and switchbacks, with two 180º turns will make it a challenge. |
Results [Race 7 of 20 races]:
Car Laps Offs Points
#8 Shell 174 0 3
#2 Alfa 179 0 5
#11 Gulf 175 0 4
R18 166 0 2
Safety Car 156 0 1
[a few quick notes: I was sorting the cars above based on their points, but I'm going to stop doing that. What I've been doing, yet strangely enough not noting, is running the cars in the finishing order of the last race, and the results above will indicate that from now on.]
At the start of the race I decided to try to run as cleanly as possible, and not risk offs. I was going to set up a points deduction for offs, and I still might. Maybe a point off for every crash, and after three you DNF. Might make things interesting...maybe for the next season.
#8 Shell car, Le Mans 1968. |
The #8 Shell car ran what I thought at the time was a very clean and fast race. It doesn't necessarily run like butter, but it's easy and fun to drive, and is gentle in the corners. It has been the most consistent car regarding coming home clean, and has deserved it's first place ranking with 21 points on the season. It probably could have handled more pushing, but I didn't want to crash, so I played it a little safe and it showed in the results.

#2 Alfa Romeo, Targa Florio |
The #2 Alfa refuses to go slow, and will shout and complain about it if you try it. You absolutely have to run it at the breaking point all the time, and due to its short wheelbase it is a much tighter ride. It's not as forgiving, but when you're blowing away the competition, what's the diff? It flat out ripped up the track. In fact, the whole Class A loved it.

#11 Gulf Jacky Ickx Daytona Winner, 1967 |
The car still ran fast, and seemed to find new corners to be faster in throughout the race. It always seems to be able to turn up the speed when it needs it. But it couldn't keep up with the Alfa and its technical prowess on this track. The Alfa's win was well-deserved.

The R18 hates these kinds of tracks. It's really heavy at 96grams, and struggles through turns unless they're flowing. Switchbacks tend to throw the back end out without much effort, and it isn't the most nimble of cars. Not surprising how it showed today. Also not surprised by the Safety Car, which needed the most limitation of power to make it around the track. It almost acted like a magnet-less Slot.it car, even though it has a magnet in it.
